Ground Beetles in Missouri

Identification:

The most typical ground beetle in this region is the Common Black Ground Beetle.  There are more than 40,000 species worldwide, around 2,000 of them are found in North America.  They are usually a shiny black color or metallic with ridged wings and large eyes.  Although they have wings they are unable to fly.  They can grow a little over a half an inch long.

Habits:

These black ground beetles usually live under old logs, leaves and stones. They eat a lot of pests and other prey that include fly maggots, caterpillars, earthworms and other soft bodied creatures.  They have also been known to hang around mulch beds, shrubs looking for prey.

Control:
